Where carbon enters as feedstock rather than as fuel, an energy-based inventory misses the largest source in the plant.

  • Feedstock carbon that leaves in the product rather than as CO₂, which a mass balance captures and an energy-based calculation does not
  • Process emissions from reactions themselves, separate from the combustion that drives them
  • Co-product and by-product allocation across a plant producing several saleable streams from one reaction train
  • N₂O and CH₄ from specific processes, which carry high global warming potentials and are often outside the CO₂-focused monitoring
  • Vent and flare streams, and whether abatement performance is measured across the period or assumed from a design specification

  • Catalyst regeneration cycles, which are periodic and are lost inside an annual average

  • The allocation rule for co-products, documented before the period, with its justification
  • Abatement system performance data across the period, including outages
  • Heat and steam import and export records at the unit level
  • Regeneration and turnaround records, and purchased intermediate data with its verification status
CBAM

What CBAM says about this sector specifically.

Hydrogen, ammonia and nitric acid are CBAM goods with their own aggregated goods categories. Hydrogen is direct emissions only and is a precursor to ammonia; ammonia is a precursor to both nitric acid and urea. If any of these leave your plant for the EU, the CBAM boundary applies to them regardless of what the rest of the site produces.
