Which one costs you more.

A default value is easier. That is not the same as cheaper.

The comparison

Two routes, two different costs.

Default valuesActual values
EffortNo evidence file requiredA complete file and a monitoring system
EffectA value applied that does not reflect your performanceA value that reflects your actual performance
Who it suitsAn operator with no data at allAn operator who has invested in efficiency
VerificationNot requiredRequired under the applicable CBAM rules
Lead timeImmediateThe monitoring has to have existed during the reporting period
The practical conclusion

Efficiency investment does not show up on its own.

Efficiency investments are not automatically reflected in a CBAM calculation if a default value is used. Using actual values may represent installation performance more accurately, but it requires a correct methodology, a traceable evidence file and verification by an accredited verifier.

We do not promise a financial outcome before examining the good, the production route, the data and the rules in force. Anyone who quotes you a saving before seeing your monitoring plan is quoting a marketing number.
How to decide

Three questions that settle it.

  • Is your installation better than average for its route? If it is not, the actual value may be worse than the default, and the file is an expense without a return.
  • Did the monitoring exist during the reporting period? Data cannot be reconstructed after the fact from records that were never kept.
  • Can each material figure be traced to a primary source? If not, the actual value will not survive verification, whatever the number says.
