Two processes

They are not the same engagement.

Validation — before operation

Is the design capable of supporting the claim?
  • Is the baseline scenario reasonable and evidenced?
  • Is the project additional, where additionality applies?
  • Will the monitoring plan actually produce valid data?
  • Are the project boundary and included sources defensible?

Verification — after operation

Did the evidence support what was reported?
  • Did what was planned actually happen?
  • Did the instruments run, and were they calibrated?
  • Is the reported reduction supported by monitoring data?
  • Has leakage been identified and accounted for?
Anyone who budgets for only one of the two rebuilds their timetable later. Plan both from the start.

What we examine

Baseline logic, instruments and the reduction calculation.

Most project failures are not calculation failures. They are monitoring failures that were designed in before the first tonne was ever claimed.

  • Baseline scenario, its logic and its supporting data
  • Additionality where the applicable programme requires it
  • Project boundary and the sources included and excluded
  • Monitoring plan and the physical measurement points
  • Instrument specifications and their calibration records
  • Actual monitoring data against the plan, including outages
  • Leakage identification and treatment
  • The reduction calculation and its equations
  • Controls against double counting, including registry evidence
What you prepare

The project pack.

  • Project design document.
  • Baseline study and its data sources.
  • Monitoring plan and measurement-point drawings.
  • Instrument calibration certificates.
  • Raw monitoring data for the period.
  • Outage and interruption log.
  • Evidence of ownership of the reduction and that it has not been sold into another registry.

What you receive — and what it does not mean.

A validation statement saying whether the project design and monitoring plan are reasonable for the stated purpose, and/or a verification statement saying whether the reported reduction is supported by evidence at a defined assurance level.

What it does not mean: We do not guarantee acceptance by any registry or programme, we do not price credits, and we do not issue carbon credits.

No. We describe the gap. You or your adviser rebuild it. If we rebuilt it, we would later be examining our own work.

Independence rules apply between the two processes and are published in the Trust Centre. Team composition is decided at acceptance, not at convenience.

Not under accreditation. Our accredited geography is Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Oman, and we say so at enquiry rather than after contract.
