Agriculture — what makes this sector technically different.

The only sector where the largest emission sources are biological processes with wide natural variability, and where a default factor can be off by more than the reduction being claimed.

Where inventories in this sector fail.

  • Direct and indirect N₂O from managed soils, which usually dominates and is derived from application rates and factors rather than measured
  • Enteric fermentation and manure management, where the management system chosen changes the CH₄ figure more than herd size does
  • The biogenic carbon boundary — which flows are reported separately from fossil emissions, and whether biogenic CO₂ is being netted against fossil CO₂
  • Land use and land use change, and whether a conversion inside the accounting window has been identified at all
  • Soil organic carbon claims, which require a measurement or model basis and a stated permanence period, not an assertion
  • Fertiliser and lime application records reconciled to purchase records and to treated area
  • Fuel used by contracted machinery, which sits outside the direct operations but inside the boundary
  • Tier level actually applied against the tier the criteria require, and the emission factors' geographic representativeness

  • Application records for nitrogen fertiliser, manure and lime, by field or management unit
  • Livestock numbers by category and the manure management system for each
  • The emission factor set used, its tier, and its geographic and climatic basis
  • Land use records covering the full accounting window, including any conversion
  • Where soil carbon is claimed: the sampling or modelling basis and the permanence period stated
  • Fuel and energy records including contracted operations
